We love what we do...
We build a limited number of healthy, efficient, beautiful custom homes.
There is no work more rewarding than building a structure and space that will make your family feel at home. It will be where you take your rest, where you start your day, where you nourish each other and your friends. Where you develop your plans of attack and where you return to regroup. The new beginnings, happy endings... it will be the backdrop to your best memories.
Thank you for your interest in Blue Horse Building + Design.
In this world of professionally concocted mission statements and unrelenting sales pitches I ask myself -- how do I honestly and effectively describe the nature and ability of this group of very gifted individuals. I hope that this site will relate to you -- who we are -- and what we can do for you.
We each have chosen the art and science of building for our careers. We share a desire to 'raise the bar' and improve the standards of our industry.
Every one of us has talent and extensive experience. What sets us apart is our willingness to treat each project as if it were our own. It makes every day fun for us. When people are having fun and doing what they love to do- good things come from it.
We personally plan, coordinate and oversee the building of every home. Every Client has 24/7 access to each of us.
This all becomes evident when you walk into one of our homes.
- Fred Ballard, General Manager
General Manager - apprenticed building barns and Ag buildings with my father on our family farm and neighboring farms. Worked as a carpenter thru graduating from Texas A&M. After a 9 year corporate stint in international sales, I returned to my calling. I began designing and building exterior/garden structures, architectural millwork, and cabinetry. My interest in high-performance materials, scientific approach and problem-solving abilities has brought me to the cutting edge of building technology. Since 1991 I have been remodeling and building custom homes in the Hill Country area.
Interior Designer - received her Interior Design degree from UT then began her professional career as an Interior Designer for Mancini Duffy in New York for 3 years. After which, she accepted a position at Gensler and Associates Architects in New York & Los Angeles for 3 years. Since 1991 Terri has worked in residential design consulting and the Motion Picture Industry in set decorating. She keeps our interiors functional, fresh and, most of all, beautiful. She has a knack for creating space, colors and textures that accentuate dialogue between interiors and landscapes, fabric and terrain.
Crew Leader - of our six man crew that performs all masonry, tile, trim and specialty items. He and the crew are from Guanajuato, México and are here under H2B temporary annual work visas. He and the crew have worked for us since 1999. Sergio came with masonry and general construction skills and has learned and developed general carpentry and trim carpentry skills exceptionally. The first things I noticed about Sergio were his focus, attention to detail and his desire to excel and do work he can be proud of.
Landscape Designer - born and raised in South Lake Tahoe, Sommer came by her appreciation for the outdoors naturally, encouraged by her father who worked 30+ years for the USDA Forest Service. After graduating with a degree in Landscape Architecture from UC Davis, Sommer took an internship with the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, where she learned more about urban planning and design. Soon after she took a position with Design Workshop in their Lake Tahoe office and later transferred to their Austin office. Sommer has been practicing landscape design for more than 5 years, working on a wide range of projects from streetscape redevelopment and corridor enhancement, to regional park and HOA recreation plans, as well as trail alignment projects and private residences. She has the ability to design unique beauty into native landscapes that serve today and will survive for future generations. Her credentials include LEED Green Associate and CDT (construction document technologist) certified.
Operations Manager - began his career as a masonry apprentice after high school, worked up to lead carpenter, and advanced to project management within 6 years. He studied architectural engineering and computer-aided drafting. For several years Jake was a project manager, supervising the building of multi-million dollar homes involving crews of 50 or more. Implementation of complex and interrelated tasks comes easy to him and, with Jake around, things tend to effortlessly fall into place. He has experience utilizing a wide variety of building materials and techniques including traditional stick frame, steel framing, SIPS, and ICF systems. Jake plans and oversees all of our jobs. He is in each of our custom homes on a daily basis. Jake is also a pilot.
Site Superintendent / Construction Manager - born and raised in Napa, California, Mike grew up around family involved in the construction industry. His father was an engineer for the Navy and enjoyed working on projects around the house with Mike. He began to work summers for Aults Builders when he was 13 and continued until he graduated high school. After graduation he worked for Channel Lumber for 18 months and spent a year with Division 6 framing company learning the ins and outs of that trade. Returning to Aults Builders he met a great carpenter who taught him most of the building expertise he can offer us today. Mike then worked for Cottonwood Homes for more than 4 years where he was quickly promoted to site supervisor. He met his future wife, Sommer, while at Division 6 Framing. Sommer got the opportunity for a company transfer to Austin. We met through a mutual friend (thanks Bill B.!!!). They love it here and Mike naturally fit in with our disciplined approach to construction management. He brings experience and fresh ideas to the outstanding Blue Horse team.
